We have had four kids now, and ALL four of them were able to sleep through the night by 6 weeks old, if not sooner. I definitely don’t think that’s a coincidence! However I do know that all families and all babies are different. These things might not work or be right or your family. But these tips worked for us and I hope they will for you too!
I firmly believe that if you use these tips from DAY ONE, that they will help your baby establish a good sleep schedule early on.
I am not saying that baby will (or even should) sleep through the night from day 1. But it’s important to start these habits very early on. Obviously babies have very small stomachs and need milk often in order to grow! Because of this, if baby is sleeping through the night, they might NOT sleep good during the day. Which is way better in my opinion! Our 1 month old has been sleeping through the night, but takes mini naps throughout the day and eats about every 2 hours. I will gladly feed him all day long if it means that he sleeps all night.
Getting Baby to Sleep Through the Night
- Swaddling baby from day 1
- The Ollie World Swaddle is the ONLY way to go!
- Sleeping in their crib from day 1
- Instead of with you or in a bassinet
- Feeding on a tight “on demand” schedule throughout the day
- Let your baby make the schedule but it shouldn’t more than 3 hours in between feedings
- Make sure your supply is UP if you are breastfeeding (here’s tips on keeping supply up)
I seriously believe that because of these three things, all of our boys have been (and still are) amazing sleepers! Our 1 month old sleeps on average 9-10 hours at night and our older boys (all under 6) sleep about 12 hours/night.
If your baby is not sleeping through the night, and it seems like nothing is working for you, don’t lose hope! It is still possible! And this time will pass eventually! Just enjoy time with your baby as much as you can!
Swaddling will definitely help baby sleep for longer stretches – especially a GOOD swaddle! It mimics baby being in the womb! I also believe that swaddling can eliminate the “need” for baby to be in a bassinet. We have used so many swaddles in our journey of parenting four boys and without a doubt, The Ollie Swaddle is the best! We were gifted The Ollie Swaddle this time around but we have purchased it before too! The fabric is lightweight and moisture-wicking so it i’s perfect for hot and cold weather! We have used it with 3/4 of our kids and refuse to use any other brand! Here’s us using it on our camping trip:
