Breastfeeding is an amazing experience but it is hard, messy, and tiring (and probably so many other things that I am leaving out). As a breastfeeding mom, I can attest these things are true.
All three of my breastfeeding experiences have been so different from one another. Sometimes I loved it, sometimes I hated it, and there was a time when I absolutely wanted to stop but kept going and a time when I desperately wanted to keep nursing but was forced to stop. Either way – breastmilk or formula – my babies were fed and happy. You can read more about my breastfeeding experiences here.
I decided to make a little list of 10 things about being a breastfeeding mom:
- You have to plan your outfits based on whether they are breastfeeding friendly
- Dresses are pretty much out of the picture unless you have one with a super stretchy neckline.
- You are thirsty all the flipping time
- When I say all the time, I mean ALL the time! I could drink gallons!
- You can do it anywhere you want
- It is so convenient that you can feed your baby wherever. Walking around target, times square, or in a bathroom stall because you’re too shy to confront all the judge-y people in the world who for some reason still don’t think it’s normal to feed babies with their breasts.
- You will forget breast pads and leak through your shirt
- It might just happen when you stop on the side of the road to feed your baby on the way to a bridal shower, but luckily have a clean shirt in your car for some random reason. (Thank you Jesus!)
- You can feel drained (physically and emotionally)
- Your baby is draining your body and it can feel that way sometimes. I feel emotionally drained sometimes too when I am needed all day long. You are still sharing your body with your baby and it takes a lot out of you.
- You plan your day around when your baby needs to eat
- “If I feed the baby NOW I will have an hour to run to Target before I need to feed him again” “If I feed him NOW I might have time to make it through the whole church service without getting up”
- You don’t have to give up looking cute
- There are so many cute shops that sell nursing clothes, but even if you don’t go that route, find cheap stretchy under tanks and put those under any top!
- You have to eat as much as you did when you were pregnant
- You are still growing a human – even if it is on the outside now! Just to make sure those extra calories are healthy!
- You cannot skip a feeding or feed on the wrong side
- Not unless you want to talk about leaking, engorgement, and lopsided boobs!
- You get to use adorable nursing covers from Milk Snob!
- AND you can use them as adorable car seat covers!
- Plus – it’s an excuse to get something girly even though you have all boys! Because – HEY – you’re wearing it on YOU anyway.
Milk Snob makes the most adorable nursing covers! The fabric is such a beautiful quality and they are incredibly soft! Even when I am not using it as a nursing cover, I am wishing I can wear it as a shirt! And as a mom of three, who likes to keep her diaper bag as small as possible to make room for everyone’s necessities, I LOVE things that have more than one purpose! These nursing covers can also be used as car seat covers too!
I also love that I can use things that are girly for me when my life is consumed by wild boys! This floral print is so beautiful! I love that I can feel beautiful wearing it AND that it doesn’t scream “nursing cover” when you look at it! Make sure to check them out for yourselves! You will not be disappointed!
Is there anything I missed on my list? What would you add?

This was right on target. I breastfed both of my girls until 14 & 15 months. I could relate! I loved the experience while it lasted, but was glad to get my old wardrobe and body back when it was over.

Yes to the first one! I always thought – does this shirt have easy access?? And, I love that I never had to worry about forgetting bottles – I was always prepared 🙂

I have a few more months but I see I have so much to learn still. Thanks!

Those are all so true! Dresses are out the window unless they are nursing friendly!

Spot on list!! Especially the part about planning everything you do around feedings! It’s so hard, but easy at the same time 🙂

All of this is so true! My son is about to turn one and our nursing game is still going strong… all of these have and do apply to me still!

I did a lot of these. I’m so glad breastfeeding is over. LOL. I once wore an overnight nursing bra to work too. Opps.

I can totally relate to #1 – I didn’t wear a dress to work for almost a year while pumping! Love the Milk Snob covers – so pretty.

Haha, I love these! Especially timing everything based on when the baby needs to eat ? I might have to look into those covers next time I have a baby ( my son absolutely refuses to let me use a cover! Haha)
